September is my absolute favourite month of the year, – and not just because of the falling leaves and cosy touches the change in season makes me want to add to my own home – but because it’s the time of year the design industry gathers together, at Maison & Objet in Paris, as well as London Design Festival.
At Maison, new designs are celebrated, barriers are broken down and the trends for the year are set – and this year’s show did not disappoint. From art-deco inspired furniture to a Lalique legacy designed by the late Zaha Hadid as well as ornate lighting, textiles and decorative accessories, I wanted to share my five top picks…
Jonathan Adler has such a fun sense of style – his new space on the third floor at Harrods is one of my favourite in the department, so I was really excited to see what he would show in Paris. These designs are gilt-edged, fun and bright. His accessories are so memorable, and recognisable – when I walk in to a room, I can always spot them instantly. The effect of the birds to his growing menagerie of ornamental animals is perfectly on trend.
Zaha Hadid signed off the final Fontana Mineral bowl, just a few days before her death – it is such a harmonious piece, bringing together her architectural style with Lalique’s distinctive baroque style, for me, it’s a true legacy.
French designers and manufacturers, Ginger Brown showed furniture and accessories using shagreen – a trend which seems as though it is here to stay. The juxtaposition of the organic and the glamourous, exotic materials and metallic detailing and French art-deco design evokes a feeling of a glamourous time-gone-by.
I couldn’t stop staring at these beautiful decorative panels. Each lotus leaf has been cleverly treated and individually coated with metallic edging by Sherman’s. The moody colour palette only adds to the dramatic effect – I love the idea of using these to add the texture of the natural world to a really glamorous project.
Lastly, the GioBagnare drop set covered metal stands, so chic. It is made of partially leather covered magnetic brass decorated with leather. Just love these.
