Luxury textile company, Rubelli group, have recently launched the 2016/17 Dominique Kieffer by Rubelli Collection, creatively led for the third year running, by design icon, Paola Navone. In this interview, Nicolò Favaretto Rubelli gives his thoughts on all things design and speaks about his home town and favourite city, Venice.
Describe a typical day?
I have always lived in Venice, the city that guarantees constant inspiration. I begin my day by walking along the beautiful Zattere, and the Canale della Guidecca, a magical promenade offering daily and endless new discoveries. The colours of the sky, the reflection of the light, the movement of the water, the boats sailing past; all a fascinating spectacle that I cannot help but photograph.
I travel frequently, but when I am at the office, no day is alike. There are many ideas to be discussed, meetings to attend, programmes to be set, strategies to be planned, products to be developed. There is never a dull moment.
Small, but forever moving and active, Venetian evenings always offer dinners, functions and events.
I am lucky enough to hold a membership at the beautiful opera house, the Teatro La Fenice. La Fenice is one of the most renowned historical landmarks in Venice. Opera is truly a wonderful way to dislocate yourself from all of the daily stresses and concerns of the world (albeit only temporarily!).
2. What’s on the mood board for 2017?
For the 2017 Rubelli Venezia collection, the Rubelli Design Studio has drawn inspiration from the idea of contrasting elements for a collection consisting of a large variety of harmonic opposites of qualities and design. Contrasting ideas include macro/micro, illusion/reality, light/heavy, shiny/matt and pastel/vivid colours.
To match these ideas, the latest collection employs unexpected materials such as contemporary damask, three-dimensional texture, mélange wool, fur-like velvet, multi-colour lampas, embroidered sheer, silky taffeta and jacquard stripes.
The incredibly vast and diverse abundance of mis-matched textiles and wall-coverings achieve balance and harmony due to consistent Rubelli imprint that they all maintain.
3. What is the first thing you’d show a new visitor to Venice?
Venice by boat is the the most faithful way to discover the city. Venetian city life has always been on the water and this is the most authentic way to fully understand the true nature of Venice. This is a beautiful, unique and unforgettable experience.
4. We’re so excited about your collaboration with Dominique Kieffer by Rubelli collection by design icon, Paola Navone! Can you tell us a little bit about it?
Paola has always been fascinated by the Rubelli world. In particular, a huge fan of Kieffer fabrics since our acquisition of the brand in 2001. When Dominique Kieffer, founder of the brand, retired, I simply asked Paola, ‘Why don’t you create the next collection?’.
Paola was initially hesitant. Technically, she is not a textile designer however she accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm! Our technicians became available to her, and under her new art direction, an exciting and innovative colour palette was chosen.
Currently developing her fifth collection, working with Paola is still extremely stimulating and intriguing. Her point of view is always unexpected…
